‘Protect The Patient First’: Surgeons Stay Calm As Powerful Japan Quake Shakes Operating Room

Kumamoto: A routine surgery turned into a test of nerves when a powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Kumamoto Prefecture, shaking an operating room in the middle of a procedure. But instead of running for cover, the surgical team did exactly what they are trained to do they protected their patient.

A video from inside the operation theatre, which has now gone viral on social media, shows doctors and nurses rushing to hold the operating table steady as the room sways violently. Medical equipment rattles, lights shake overhead, and one staff member even loses balance during the tremors. Despite the chaos, the team remains focused on keeping the patient safe.

The hospital later confirmed that the operation was completed successfully after a brief interruption. Neither the patient nor any member of the medical team suffered injuries, and normal hospital services resumed on August 5.

The earthquake struck Japan’s southern island of Kyushu on July 28, with its epicentre near Kumamoto at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometres. The strong tremor prompted authorities to issue a tsunami warning for parts of the coastline before it was later withdrawn after further assessments found no major threat.

While the courage inside the operating room has captured global attention, the earthquake left a far more devastating impact across the region. According to official reports, at least 38 people were killed, while more than 120 others sustained injuries. Several buildings were damaged, roads cracked, and emergency crews spent days clearing debris and restoring essential services.

The disaster also disrupted daily life for thousands of residents. More than 79,000 households temporarily lost access to water, while around 3,500 homes were left without electricity. With temperatures touching nearly 35 degrees Celsius, thousands of people moved into evacuation centres as authorities worked to restore basic utilities. The quake’s impact was strong enough to be felt in neighbouring South Korea as well.

Japan is among the world’s most earthquake prone nations, sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire where several tectonic plates meet. Strict building regulations, regular disaster drills and one of the world’s most advanced early warning systems have helped the country minimise casualties during many major earthquakes. Even so, powerful quakes continue to pose a serious challenge.

For many people, though, the defining moment of this disaster wasn’t the shaking buildings or damaged roads. It was the quiet determination of a group of surgeons who refused to leave their patient behind. In a matter of seconds, instinct took over, reminding the world that courage is often measured not by dramatic words, but by calm actions when everything around is falling apart.
