Slayen Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei will be buried next month, on 9th of July. His funeral was first planned for 4th of March, but was postponed due to the war. Khamenei, 86, was killed on 28th February along with his daughter, son in law, and his grandchildren by air strikes launched by the US.
Why the delay
According to Islamic beliefs, the dead have to be buried in 24 hours, but there are exceptions, such as during times of war.
The funeral procession will begin in Tehran on 4th July, after that in the holy city of Qom and his birth place Mashhad, and will be finally buried at the shrine of Imam Raza on 9th July. Khamenei led Iran for 37 years, from 1989 to 2026. His successor and son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has largely been absent from public domain since he took over.
Now that the US and Iran are back on the negotiation table after the announcement of the peace deal, it remains to be seen how the conclusion of this entire saga will play out.
