IndiGo Flight from Visakhapatnam Makes Safe Emergency Landing at Delhi Airport

A full emergency was declared at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday after an IndiGo flight arriving from Visakhapatnam reported a suspected engine failure mid-air.
The incident involved IndiGo flight 6E 579, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft carrying 161 passengers. Airport authorities placed Runway 28 on high alert and activated emergency protocols immediately upon receiving the report. Fire tenders were mobilised as a precautionary measure.
According to sources, the flight landed safely around 11 am. All passengers were evacuated without incident, and no damage was reported to the aircraft or the runway.
The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) confirmed that information about the emergency landing was received at 10:53 am. “A flight made an emergency landing at Delhi airport. The fire department received information about the emergency landing at 10.53 am and immediately dispatched fire tenders. The flight landed safely,” the DFS said in a statement.

This marks the latest in a series of engine-related incidents involving Boeing 737 aircraft at the capital’s airport. Last month, a full emergency was declared after a SpiceJet Delhi-Leh flight experienced an issue with one of its engines. That aircraft, also a Boeing 737 carrying around 150 passengers, returned safely to Delhi.
Concerns over the CFM56 engines powering Boeing 737-800 jets have grown in recent times. Several international airlines have reported recurring technical problems with these engines. Last year, Aerolineas Argentinas took the step of grounding eight of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft as a result.
Airport operations at Delhi were not significantly disrupted beyond the temporary closure of the affected runway for the emergency response. Passengers on the Visakhapatnam-Delhi flight were reported to be safe and unharmed following the incident.
Authorities have not yet released further details on the exact nature of the suspected engine failure, but an investigation is expected to determine the cause. IndiGo, India’s largest low-cost carrier, has not issued an official statement on the matter as of now.
The event underscores ongoing safety considerations surrounding certain Boeing 737 variants amid multiple reported engine issues both domestically and internationally.
