In One-in-a-Million Birth, Brazilian Newborn Arrives Clutching the IUD Meant to Prevent His Pregnancy

In a rare and extraordinary case from Brazil, a baby was born holding an intrauterine device (IUD) widely known as copper T or copper coil in his fist, an image that quickly went viral online. The contraceptive is considered 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, but baby Matheus Gabriel seemingly emerged as the rare 1% exception.

The child was born at Hospital Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Nerópolis, Goiás, to Queidy Araujo de Oliveira. According to reports cited by Mirror, doctors were stunned to see the newborn arrive with a clenched fist gripping the copper T.

Oliveira had been using the contraceptive for nearly two years when she discovered during a routine check-up that she was pregnant. Doctors advised her not to remove the device, warning that it could pose risks to her pregnancy, so she chose to keep it in place. Eventually, the device found its way out — not through medical intervention, but in the tiny palm of her baby at birth.
