Indian passport holders can now transit through German airports without requiring a Schengen Airport Transit Visa, starting June 3. The new rule applies to travellers who fulfil specific eligibility requirements while passing through Germany on their way to another destination. According to NDTV, the move is expected to make international travel easier for Indian passengers using German airports for layovers.
Relief For Indian Travellers
The latest change means Indian citizens travelling via Germany to non-Schengen destinations will no longer have to obtain a separate airport transit visa in many cases. Travellers must, however, remain within the international transit area of the airport and should not enter Germany through immigration control.
The German Embassy in New Delhi said the decision reflects Germany’s efforts to strengthen ties with India and improve the movement of people between the two countries. NDTV Profit reported that the development was linked to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s India visit earlier this year.
What The Rule Means
The exemption only applies to airport transit and does not permit entry into Germany or the wider Schengen region. Indian travellers wishing to leave the airport or enter Germany will still need an appropriate Schengen visa or German national visa.
The relaxed rule is likely to benefit Indian travellers flying to countries such as the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom through major German airports including Frankfurt and Munich. Earlier, many passengers were required to secure a transit visa even for short layovers without leaving the airport premises.
Conditions Still Apply
Reports noted that visa-free transit is only available to eligible travellers meeting the prescribed conditions. Passengers may still need a transit visa if they have to leave the transit zone, switch airports, or stay overnight outside the airport’s international area.
According to NDTV, the new policy is expected to reduce travel-related paperwork and make connecting journeys through Germany more convenient for Indian passport holders.
