Tokyo: A mosque inaugurated in the presence of Pakistan’s ambassador to Japan has become the centre of a legal and diplomatic controversy after Japanese authorities reportedly declared the structure illegal due to the absence of required permissions. The issue has sparked debate in both Japan and Pakistan and has placed Islamabad’s diplomatic mission in an uncomfortable position.
Mosque Inauguration Draws Attention
According to reports by local outlet Japan Forward, the mosque located in Kawagoe, near Tokyo, was inaugurated earlier this year with Pakistan’s Ambassador to Japan, Abdul Hameed, attending the ceremony. However, Japanese authorities later found that the construction had allegedly proceeded without securing mandatory approvals under local regulations.
The development has triggered criticism and embarrassment for Pakistan’s diplomatic establishment, especially after visuals and details from the inauguration circulated online.

Japanese Authorities Seek Action
Officials in Japan have reportedly initiated administrative procedures against the mosque, with demolition now being considered as one of the possible outcomes. Authorities have maintained that the structure violates local planning and construction rules.
Reports also suggested that concerns were raised over the location and construction permissions linked to the project. Japanese officials are said to be closely examining whether local regulations were bypassed during the development process.
Pakistan Embassy Issues Clarification
Following the controversy, the Pakistan Embassy in Japan issued a clarification distancing itself from the construction process. The embassy reportedly stated that the ambassador attended the inauguration under the impression that all legal requirements and permissions had already been obtained.
The embassy also urged Pakistani nationals living in Japan to comply with Japanese laws and cooperate fully with local authorities.
