A 21-year-old woman lost her life in a horrifying accident during a bungee jumping activity in Brazil after operators failed to secure her safety rope before launching her from a bridge. The incident has sparked an investigation into apparent negligence at the adventure site.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was participating in the bungee jump on Saturday at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, along a trail in Limeira, in Brazil’s São Paulo state. According to accounts from witnesses and preliminary police findings, she was carried to the edge of the bridge in a “Superman” position by three staff members and pushed off without the essential safety line attached to her harness. She fell approximately 40 metres to the ground below.
Footage of the event, which has spread rapidly on social media, captures the moment she was released. Shortly afterward, voices can be heard shouting in alarm about the missing rope. Staff reportedly only noticed the critical oversight once she had already jumped.
Earlier that day, Freitas had shared positive updates from the location on her social media accounts, including photographs of the site, participant wristbands, and images with attraction staff, indicating no apparent concerns before the jump.
In the aftermath, authorities detained six individuals for questioning. Three men, aged 27, 32, and 42, were subsequently arrested. They face charges of homicide with eventual intent, a Brazilian legal category applied when individuals undertake a risky action while aware it could lead to death. A statement from the governor’s office noted that the safety equipment was not properly secured at the time of the jump. Emergency medical teams from SAMU confirmed her death at the scene.
The investigation continues as officials seek to establish the full sequence of events and assign responsibility. “Investigations continue to determine the circumstances and possible responsibilities,” the governor’s office said.
