Broad Peak Avalanche: Nirmal ‘Nims’ Purja Still Missing As Global Rescue Effort Intensifies

Islamabad: Renowned mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja remains missing after a deadly avalanche struck an international expedition on Pakistan’s Broad Peak, one of the world’s highest and most dangerous mountains. Rescue teams continue to search for the celebrated climber and others unaccounted for despite challenging weather and treacherous terrain.
The avalanche swept across the climbing route during the team’s summit push on Broad Peak, an 8,047 metre peak in the Karakoram range. According to the latest official updates, four climbers have been confirmed dead, while Purja and several others remain missing. Helicopters, drones and ground rescue teams have been deployed, but fresh snowfall, poor visibility and the constant threat of further avalanches have slowed operations.
Purja, a Nepal born British mountaineer, is widely regarded as one of the greatest high altitude climbers of his generation. He rose to global fame in 2019 after scaling all 14 mountains above 8,000 metres in a record six months and six days, a feat that redefined the limits of modern mountaineering. His achievements also inspired the Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
The tragedy has sparked discussions within the global climbing community about the risks involved in extreme altitude expeditions. Some veteran mountaineers have described Purja’s climbing style as bold and highly ambitious, arguing that he often embraced greater risks than many of his peers. Others have defended his approach, noting that every expedition in the “death zone” above 8,000 metres involves unpredictable hazards and difficult decisions. There is currently no official evidence linking the avalanche to any specific decision taken by the expedition.
Broad Peak, located near K2, is known for its harsh weather, unstable snow conditions and frequent avalanche activity. Even experienced climbers face significant dangers on the mountain, where sudden weather changes can turn a routine ascent into a life threatening emergency.
Messages of support have poured in from climbers and well wishers around the world as rescue efforts continue. Authorities have said the search will resume whenever weather conditions allow, while families of those still missing await further updates.
As of Saturday evening, there has been no official confirmation regarding Purja’s condition, and the rescue operation remains ongoing.
