Panaji: More than a decade after her daughter accused former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal of rape, the survivor’s mother has spoken about the emotional toll of the prolonged legal battle, saying it “took a lot of strength to keep going” as the family waited years for justice.
Her remarks came shortly after the Bombay High Court convicted Tejpal in the 2013 sexual assault case and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, overturning the acquittal handed down by a Goa trial court in 2021. The High Court also granted Tejpal two weeks to surrender before serving his sentence.
Describing the verdict as a deeply emotional moment, the survivor’s mother said the family’s journey through the criminal justice system had been long and exhausting. She acknowledged the resilience shown by her daughter throughout the proceedings, noting that continuing the fight over several years required immense courage and determination.
The case began in November 2013 when a woman journalist accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel elevator during the THiNK Fest event in Goa. The allegations sparked national outrage, leading to Tejpal stepping down as Editor in Chief of Tehelka and the registration of a criminal case by the Goa Police.
Following the investigation, Tejpal was charged with offences including rape and wrongful confinement. He was arrested in 2013 and later released on bail while the trial continued.
In May 2021, a sessions court in Goa acquitted Tejpal of all charges, ruling that the prosecution had failed to prove the allegations beyond reasonable doubt. The verdict drew criticism from several legal experts, women’s rights advocates and journalists, prompting the Goa government to challenge the acquittal before the Bombay High Court.
After hearing the appeal, the High Court reversed the trial court’s decision, held Tejpal guilty and imposed a 10 year prison sentence. The court’s ruling marks a significant turn in one of India’s most closely watched sexual assault cases involving a prominent media figure.
For the survivor’s family, however, the verdict represents more than just a legal outcome. The mother’s statement reflects the emotional cost of pursuing justice over nearly 13 years, during which the family endured repeated court hearings, public scrutiny and uncertainty.
While welcoming the judgment, the family has also highlighted the importance of supporting survivors who choose to pursue legal action despite the personal and emotional challenges involved. Their experience has once again drawn attention to the lengthy nature of criminal trials in India and the resilience often required of survivors and their families.
Tejpal is entitled to challenge the Bombay High Court’s judgment before the Supreme Court. Unless any higher court grants relief, he is required to comply with the High Court’s order to surrender within the time granted.
