Four days after being handed to its new owner, a luxury boat worth millions of dollars sunk in the Mediterranean Sea.
The NY Post stated that the Angiola II, a 98-foot, $9.1 million yacht, was carrying 14 passengers and crew members when it caught fire on Tuesday due to an engine failure off Porto Cervo, a well-known vacation town in Sardinia, Italy.
After the fire, the ship started to fill with water, flipped over, and sank. The yacht was shown gradually sinking into the ocean in footage captured at the scene.
No injuries were reported, and all 14 passengers were saved. A nearby vessel scooped up the majority of them. It is said that the owner, an Italian businessman whose identity has not been revealed, was the last to depart from the yacht.
They awaited the arrival of Italian officials so they could be safely transported to the coast.
According to reports, the boat sank to a depth of roughly 23 feet (7 meters). According to Fox News, it went down in the waters between L’Isola dei Cappuccini and Capo Ferro along Sardinia’s renowned Costa Smeralda, popularly referred to as the Emerald Coast.
The partially submerged yacht was secured on the bottom during the rescue effort. According to officials, there didn’t seem to be a gasoline leak from the ship. Italian shipyard Permare constructed the Amer F100 yacht known as the Angiola II in 2020. It has room for five crew members and can hold up to ten passengers in five cabins.
The top speed of the four-engine yacht is 28 knots, or more than 32 mph (52 kmph).
The event is currently being looked into by Italian authorities. The cause of the engine failure and the ensuing fire and flooding is being investigated by the Italian Coast Guard.
In order to retrieve the yacht from the catastrophe site, authorities are also getting ready to use a 220-ton pontoon boat.
