59% of Americans Say US Has Gone Too Far in Iran War, Half Don’t Trust Trump on Military Force: AP-NORC Poll

More than half of Americans think the US has overreached in its military campaign against Iran and a new poll suggests the ongoing conflict could turn into a political problem for Donald Trump.

The AP-NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research survey, released as the US-Israel war with Iran enters its fourth week, found 59 percent of Americans believe US military action against Iran has been excessive. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has continued deploying additional warships and troops to the Middle East.

Trump’s overall approval rating stands at roughly 40 percent unchanged from last month. His foreign policy numbers are slightly lower but have also held steady.

The partisan split is clear. Nine in ten Democrats and about six in ten independents say the US attacks have gone too far. Republicans are more divided: roughly half say the level of military action is about right, while only a small number want it to go further.

On ground troops, opposition is broad. About six in ten Americans are against sending US soldiers to fight inside Iran including a large majority of Democrats and around half of Republicans. Support for airstrikes targeting Iranian leaders or military installations is limited, with many respondents either opposed or uncertain.

Trust in Trump’s military judgment remains low. Around half of US adults say they have little or no confidence in the president to make the right calls on the use of force abroad a figure that has stayed flat in recent months. Trump’s overall support hasn’t fallen sharply, but the poll finds widespread public discomfort with the war’s trajectory particularly if the US moves toward deeper involvement.
