
On Monday, August 10, 2026, officials in Dhaka announced that 16 Bangladeshi migrant laborers had died in a large fire at a couch manufacturing business in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
The fire started in the Musa Sanaiya industrial area on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
While representatives from the Bangladeshi Embassy in Riyadh are collaborating with Saudi authorities to finalize the repatriation procedures, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is keeping an eye on the issue.
Ariful Haque Choudhury, Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, has directed officials to return the bodies as soon as possible and make sure the grieving families receive the required government support and compensation.
With almost 3.5 million Bangladeshis residing there, Saudi Arabia continues to be the top destination for Bangladeshi migrant workers, who sent home over $2.7 billion in remittances last year.
