“Will Step Down If You Say So”: Uddhav Thackeray’s Shock Offer Amid Fresh Shiv Sena Turmoil

Mumbai: In a dramatic political moment that has sent ripples across Maharashtra, Shiv Sena (UBT) cheif Uddhav Thackeray has offered to step down from his leadership position, saying he is ready to quit if party workers feel he no longer deserve their trust.

The statement came during the party’s 60th foundation day event in Mumbai, at a time when internal dissent is once again threatening to destabilize the faction. Thackeray’s remark part challenge, part emotional appeal follows growing speculation over a fresh split, with several MPs reportedly distancing themselves from the party.

“I am ready to resign, you decide,” Thackeray told party workers, making it clear that leadership should rest on confidence, not entitlement. However, he added a firm caveat: he would not allow the party to fall into “wrong hands,” signaling distrust toward defectors and rival factions.

The crisis deepened after at least six Lok Sabha MPs skipped a key party event, fueling buzz of their possible shift toward the Eknath Shinde led faction. The absence was seen as a major blow to Thackeray’s authority, especially given that these leaders were elected under his banner in the 2024 general elections.

Thackeray also issued a rare public apology to voters, acknowledging the sense of betrayal many supporters may feel amid the ongoing rebellion. His speech blended defiance with introspection he attacked the BJP for allegedly engineering defections while also asking his own cadre to honestly assess his leadership.

The latest developments highlight the continuing aftershocks of the 2022 Shiv Sena split, when a rebellion led by Eknath Shinde fractured the party and led to Thackeray losing control of its original name and symbol. Since then, his faction has struggled to maintain cohesion while fending off repeated poaching attempts and internal dissatisfaction.

Despite the turmoil, Thackeray struck a combative note, insisting he would continue to fight politically unless explicitly rejected by his workers. For now, the ball appears firmly in the court of Shiv Sainiks whose response could determine whether this resignation offer remains symbolic or becomes a turning point in Maharashtra politics.

As the situation unfolds, one thing is clear the battle for the soul of the Shiv Sena is far from over.
