Dhaka: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday, marking a major political shift in the state after the party’s landmark Assembly election victory. The oath-taking ceremony was held in Kolkata in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and several Chief Ministers from National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-ruled states.
The event drew a large gathering of BJP supporters and senior party leaders, symbolising the party’s historic breakthrough in a state that had remained outside its political control for decades. Suvendu Adhikari took the oath in Bengali and pledged to work for the development and progress of West Bengal under the BJP-led administration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the new Chief Minister and described the occasion as a significant moment in Bengal’s political history. Senior BJP leaders present at the ceremony highlighted the party’s electoral victory as a reflection of changing political sentiments in the state. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted amid tight security arrangements across Kolkata, with traffic advisories issued in several parts of the city due to the presence of high-profile political leaders and dignitaries.
Suvendu Adhikari, who was once a senior leader in the Trinamool Congress before joining the BJP, now becomes the face of the party’s governance in West Bengal. Political observers are closely watching how the new administration shapes the state’s future after this historic political transition.
