Kolkata Police Unfollows Mamata Banerjee, Starts Following PM Modi After BJP Bengal Win

Kolkata: The official X account of Kolkata Police has triggered political discussion after making noticeable changes to the profiles it follows on social media following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections. According to a report by The Times of India, the police department’s account unfollowed senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, including Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, while following Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The development comes shortly after the BJP secured a landmark win in the state elections, ending the long-standing rule of the TMC in West Bengal. The shift in Kolkata Police’s digital engagement has been widely interpreted as a symbolic reflection of the changing political landscape in the state.

Reports also stated that the social media changes coincided with modifications in security arrangements across Kolkata, including the withdrawal of additional security from certain Trinamool Congress offices and residences of party leaders. The move generated significant reactions online, with social media users debating whether the action represented an administrative protocol change or a politically symbolic gesture.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the swearing-in ceremony of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, which is expected to take place in Kolkata in the presence of several senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. Authorities have also issued traffic advisories and heightened security measures across the city ahead of the major political event.
