Supreme Court Sabarimala Hearing: “Respect All Views Except WhatsApp University”

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India made a pointed observation during the ongoing hearing of the Sabarimala Temple case, stating that while diverse opinions should be respected, views derived from “WhatsApp University” cannot be given credence.

The remark came as the bench examined arguments from various parties in the long-running matter concerning entry restrictions at the Sabarimala Temple. The court emphasised the importance of relying on credible, reasoned submissions rather than unverified or misleading information often circulated on social media platforms.

As highlighted by NDTV, the proceedings saw extensive arguments addressing constitutional principles such as religious freedom, equality, and the scope of judicial review. The case stems from the Supreme Court’s landmark 2018 judgment, which had allowed women of all age groups to enter the temple, declaring the earlier restriction unconstitutional.

During the hearing, the bench reiterated that it remains open to considering a wide range of perspectives, including those rooted in faith, tradition, and constitutional interpretation. However, it made it clear that submissions must be grounded in reliable material and legal reasoning rather than hearsay or misinformation.

The Centre and other parties have presented differing viewpoints, particularly on whether the restriction constitutes discrimination or forms an essential religious practice. The court is currently reviewing these arguments as part of a broader examination of constitutional questions linked to the case.

NDTV reported that the proceedings continue to draw attention due to their wider implications for the balance between religious customs and fundamental rights. The Supreme Court’s observations underline its focus on maintaining judicial integrity by filtering out unsubstantiated claims while engaging with legitimate arguments.

The matter remains under consideration, with further hearings expected as the court works towards addressing the complex legal and constitutional issues involved.
