By 2033, the government hopes to have at least five domestic small modular nuclear reactors operating, according to Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in the Department of Atomic Energy. The minister stated in a written response to the Lok Sabha that the SHANTI Act, 2025, which allows private involvement in the nuclear energy industry, was passed by parliament.
According to Dr. Singh, the Bhabha Atomic Research Center is building a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor intended to produce hydrogen, a 55-megawatt reactor, and a 220-megawatt Bharat Small Modular Reactor.
As stated in the Nuclear Energy Mission, the government has developed a plan to meet the 100 gigawatt nuclear power capacity by 2047.
According to the roadmap, the current nuclear power capacity of 8.78 gigawatts is anticipated to increase to approximately 22 gigawatts by 2031–2032 based on the progressive completion of projects that are now in various phases of execution, the minister said.
