Somtane-Chikhli Chord Line Project in Maharashtra Approved by Indian Railways, to Cost 172 Crores

In order to relieve traffic at Panvel Junction, Indian Railways has approved the Somtane-Chikhli Chord Line Project in Maharashtra, which will cost 172 crore rupees. According to the Ministry of Railways, the new chord line would complete a vital rail connection between Somtane on the Roha route and Chikhli on the Karjat route. It will enable smooth communication between the Karjat and Roha lines without requiring trains to reverse their engines or reach the crowded Panvel Junction.
For freight traffic connected to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority and Trust (JNPA and JNPT), which manages about 60% of container traffic in India, the project is very important. Additionally, the initiative is anticipated to save roughly 110 minutes of detention time every freight train, greatly increasing logistics efficiency and turnaround speed. In order to meet India’s expanding logistics and economic needs, Indian Railways will continue to concentrate on capacity expansion, multimodal connectivity, and the creation of effective freight infrastructure.
