
New Delhi : Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress leaders Derek O’Brien and Abhishek Banerjee, and other Opposition leaders were detained and taken away in a bus after police stopped the INDIA bloc’s protest march on Parliament Street. Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remained seated inside Akashvani Bhavan after being detained during the INDIA bloc MPs’ march from Parliament to the Election Commission.
Rahul and Priyanka were seated beneath a tree near Gate 4, where senior Congress leaders Digvijaya Singh and Deepender Hooda were also present. Senior Delhi Police officers asked Rahul to vacate the spot, citing it as government property. Police were also attempting to bring a bus inside Akashvani Bhavan. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Opposition MPs were seen getting off a police bus after it moved around 50 metres. The footage was from moments earlier, and the formal detention or release status of the MPs remained unclear. Akhilesh Yadav and Abhishek Banerjee were detained along with several other Opposition leaders. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused CEC Gyanesh Kumar of “vote theft” and alleged that those who taught him the “art” were the “biggest thieves”.
The Congress alleged that CEC Gyanesh Kumar was a “traitor to the country” and demanded his resignation and arrest. In a post amid the ongoing Opposition protest, the Congress also alleged that Gyanesh Kumar was an “agent” of “vote theft” and claimed that he would have to face arrest despite what Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah might do. Security was tightened around the INDIA bloc’s sit-in near the Election Commission office, with paramilitary personnel moving closer to the protest site and police and security forces surrounding the area from multiple sides.
