Mumbai: An unusual visitor caused a stir at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in the early hours of Wednesday when a python hatchling was spotted inside a railway engine. Recognizing the potential danger to both the reptile and operations, vigilant railway staff immediately alerted wildlife rescue experts.
Upon receiving the distress call, Abhishek Ashok Thavare, Honorary Animal Welfare Officer for the State of Maharashtra, rushed to the terminal. Taking all necessary safety precautions, Thavare successfully and safely retrieved the young python at approximately 1:40 AM. The prompt intervention ensured that railway operations continued without any disruption.
Following the successful operation, the hatchling was safely released back into its natural wilderness habitat.
Seasonal Movements of a Protected Species
The Indian Rock Python found across the country is a non-venomous snake species protected under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act. These reptiles play a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance within the food chain. Wildlife experts note that this particular period marks the hatching season for python eggs, which explains the increased movement and visibility of young python hatchlings.
With the onset of the monsoon season in Mumbai and across Maharashtra, wild animals frequently seek dry shelter in human habitations or other seemingly secure structures. It is highly probable that this hatchling entered the train engine to escape the heavy rains or in search of a dry refuge, inadvertently hitching a ride to the terminal.
Guidelines for Wildlife Encounters During Monsoons
Reflecting on the incident, Abhishek Thavare emphasized that wildlife encounters are common during the rainy season. He urged citizens to remain calm during such situations:
“Citizens should not panic or attempt to capture or harm the snake themselves. Instead, they should immediately contact the Forest Department or certified snake rescuers. Professional rescue operations are crucial for both wildlife conservation and human safety.”
The alertness and quick thinking demonstrated by the railway employees not only saved the life of the protected reptile but also ensured that local and long-distance train services remained completely unaffected.
