Pathankot, Punjab: In a significant breakthrough, police in Punjab’s Pathankot district have uncovered a suspected espionage ring and arrested a local resident for allegedly transmitting live footage of Indian Army and paramilitary movements to handlers in Pakistan.
Baljit Singh, also known as Bittu, from Chakk Dhariwal village, was taken into custody after authorities received intelligence about suspicious activities along the Pathankot-Jammu section of National Highway-44. According to police, Singh had set up an internet-enabled CCTV camera at a shop near a bridge in the Sujanpur area in January to monitor the movements of security forces.
Senior police officer Daljinder Singh Dhillon stated that the surveillance feed was being sent electronically to operatives in Pakistan and other locations abroad. During interrogation, Singh reportedly admitted to receiving instructions from an unidentified individual in Dubai and was paid Rs 40,000 for the operation. A CCTV camera and an internet WiFi router were recovered from his possession.
The Pathankot Police shared details of the arrest on social media, describing it as a major success in dismantling a module linked to national security threats. A case has been registered against four individuals, including Singh, Vikramjit Singh alias Vikka, Balwinder Singh alias Vicky, and Taranpreet Singh alias Tannu. The accused are believed to have been involved in criminal and anti-national activities. Raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Officials have forwarded a detailed report to higher authorities. Investigations are continuing to uncover the full extent of the cross-border network and identify the sources of funding.
This incident comes shortly after the Punjab Police dismantled two other espionage modules allegedly backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). In those operations, authorities recovered high-tech, China-made solar-powered CCTV cameras used to send live feeds of sensitive military locations to Pakistan-based handlers.
In one case handled by the Counter Intelligence Wing in Jalandhar, operative Sukhwinder Singh alias Sukha from Ferozepur was arrested. Another module in Kapurthala led to the arrest of two individuals identified as Sona and Sandeep Singh alias Sonu, also from Ferozepur. Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav had highlighted how such solar-powered and SIM-based cameras enable off-grid surveillance of defence-related sites.
The latest arrest underscores ongoing concerns regarding espionage activities targeting India’s security infrastructure in the border state of Punjab.
