A significant achievement in India’s initiative for self-reliant defence production has been marked by Telangana-based startup Dvipa Defence, as its UGRAM 7.62×51 mm battle rifle has successfully passed crucial trials conducted by the Army and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The rifle is now being procured by various Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
One of the fastest indigenous weapon development programs in the nation, the UGRAM rifle was conceived and constructed in just 100 days in collaboration with DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE).
The rifle has successfully cleared Army General Staff Qualitative Requirement (GSQR) testing, thorough field evaluations in all climatic situations and MHA Board trials.
According to Sibu Joseph, the company’s managing director, Dvipa obtained its manufacturing license in 2021 and has since constructed a complete production facility on more than 13 acres of land in Hyderabad that were given by the Telangana government.
“The production license in 2021 marked the start of our journey. With UGRAM emerging as our flagship platform, we have now created more than 100 indigenous weapon systems and variants. Joseph stated, “We are still dedicated to producing top-notch defense products in India for Indian security forces.”
The rifle has undergone thorough reliability and endurance testing, according to the manufacturer, and is currently being considered for procurement by the CRPF, ITBP, SSB, and NSG. According to Dvipa, the UGRAM has an effective range of 500 meters, weighs less than four kilos, and has a contemporary gas-operated revolving bolt system.
A family of domestic weaponry, including assault rifles, carbines, light machine guns, sub-machine guns, and anti-drone systems, is also being developed by the business.
With Army trials finished and procurement moving forward, Dvipa thinks the UGRAM program is a significant step toward bolstering Hyderabad’s standing as a center for domestic defense production while lowering India’s reliance on foreign small guns.
Since its establishment in 2018, Dvipa Defence has expanded its product line to include an indigenous sub-machine gun, assault rifle, ultra-light machine gun, and weaponized anti-drone platform. The company now manufactures from its licensed Telangana facility.
It is now positioned among a new generation of private Indian defence manufacturers, The company also develops an indigenous family of weapons, including the U-19 sub-machine gun, Ultra-Light Machine Gun (ULMG), U-45 assault rifle and U-39 platform, along with a weaponised anti-drone system based on the UGRAM architecture.
