Pulwama Attack Mastermind Hamza Burhan Shot Dead by Unknown Gunmen in Pakistan’s Muzaffarabad

New Delhi: Hamza Burhan, also known as Arjumand Gulzar Dar, one of the alleged masterminds of the 2019 Pulwama terror attack, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He was shot multiple times by unidentified assailants. No organisation has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Burhan, originally from Kharbatpora, Ratnipora in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, was an Al-Badr terrorist commander and one of the main accused in allegedly planning and arranging the logistics for the Pulwama attack. In 2022, the Indian government designated him a terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The government’s notification had described him as “one of the associate members of Al Badr, a terrorist outfit designated under the UAPA,” aged 23 at the time.

The February 14, 2019 attack targeted a CRPF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar highway when suicide bomber Adil Ahmed Dar, a member of Jaish-e-Mohammed, rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into a bus carrying CRPF personnel, killing 40 jawans. It remains one of the deadliest attacks on Indian security forces in recent years. The Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed later claimed responsibility for the attack and released a video of the suicide bomber.
