On Friday, July 31, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Andy Burnham pledged to fully utilize the trade and investment prospects provided by the recently operationalized bilateral trade agreement and to expand the India-U.K. comprehensive strategic partnership to “new heights.”
During a phone call, PM Modi and U.K. PM Burnham talked about important aspects of the two-way ties.
PM Modi remarked on social media that he wished U.K. Prime Minister Burnham a prosperous term and congratulated him on taking over the top job.
“We agreed to take the India-U.K. Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to new heights by working together across sectors like technology, innovation, defense, security, clean energy, education, and people-to-people ties,” he stated.
“For the shared prosperity and well-being of both our people, we will also work closely to fully harness the trade and investment opportunities presented by the recently operationalized India-U.K. Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement,” Prime Minister Modi declared.
According to a British readout, U.K. Prime Minister Burnham started the discussion by considering how strong the U.K.-India cooperation is and how much of an influence it has had on local communities around the United Kingdom. “The U.K.-India Vision 2035 framework and strong people-to-people links are just two of the ways the U.K. Prime Minister outlined his goals to further improve the U.K.-India relationship.”
PM Modi highlighted the connections between the two leaders’ home cities of Manchester and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, which he referred to as the “Manchester of India,” while U.K. PM Burnham lauded the contribution Indian communities in the U.K. make to the fabric of U.K. society.
Speaking about commerce, PM Modi emphasized the importance of the recently enacted free trade deal, which will provide possibilities for citizens of both nations.
