Ladakh: India’s geothermal energy sector has gained renewed attention after Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) reported encouraging results from its geothermal exploration project in Ladakh. According to Business Today, the development is being viewed as a significant milestone that could help India diversify its renewable energy portfolio beyond solar, wind and hydropower.

The project, located in the Puga Valley region of Ladakh, has highlighted the possibility of tapping underground heat reservoirs for clean and sustainable energy generation. Unlike solar and wind energy, geothermal power offers round-the-clock electricity generation because it relies on heat naturally stored beneath the Earth’s surface. Experts cited by Business Today noted that geothermal energy could provide a stable and dependable source of renewable power with lower carbon emissions.

The report also highlighted that countries such as Iceland, the United States and Indonesia have already developed strong geothermal sectors, while India’s geothermal potential has largely remained underexplored despite the presence of several promising sites across the Himalayas and western coastal regions.

Industry observers believe ONGC’s success may encourage stronger policy support and investment in geothermal research and infrastructure. According to Business Today, India currently lacks a large-scale geothermal power plant despite studies identifying multiple geothermal provinces in the country.

The report noted that geothermal projects require significant upfront investment and advanced drilling technology, but they can offer long-term energy stability once operational. Experts also stressed the importance of government incentives, scientific collaboration and regulatory support to expand the sector further.
