Srinagar: At an event in Srinagar Jammu Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah refused to cut ribbon that were designed as Indian National Flag.
Looking at the ribbon he said,”Yeh nahi kaat sakte (We can’t cut this)” turning to Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary, who agreed on the same.
Omar was attending Handicraft departments’ ‘Know Your Artisans’ event at Kashmir Haat where he was invited for inauguration. The moment he saw Tricolor on the ribbon he immediately suggested it could be untied instead of cutting it. After unfolding the ribbon CM and Deputy CM asked the organisers to handle it with care and respectfully keep it.

The BJP appreciated Omar’s refusal and his presence of mind for handling the situation without making it chaotic. The party’s J&K spokesperson Altaf Thakur has sought an enquiry into the incident and has sought to take strict action against the people responsible for this incident. He said, ” Using the national flag as a ribbon to be cut during an inauguration reflects a serious lack of understanding and respect for its sanctity.”
Further he added,” This is not a minor oversight but a grave lapse. The officers who allowed or designed such an act must be identified and suspended. Exemplary punishment is necessary to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
After this incident, the video of this event went viral that made rounds on social media gaining his praise for his conscience. Users wrote on X, ” True respect isn’t in ceremony, but in conscience, Omar Abdullah chose dignity over optics. A gesture that speaks louder than words.”
Other X user wrote, ” I appreciate and respect your gesture Mr. Chief Minister. Thank you for being a role model. Bharat Mata Ki Jai!” .
