A 4.3-magnitude earthquake hit Maharashtra’s Nashik district Saturday night, followed by a 3.3-magnitude aftershock early Sunday morning. Cracks turned up in a few houses and residents ran into the streets, but officials said Sunday there were no casualties.
The National Centre for Seismology recorded the first quake at around 10 pm Saturday and the second at 5:33 am Sunday. Both originated at a shallow depth of 5 km near Bhanwad, close to the Hatgad hill range along the Maharashtra-Gujarat border.
People felt the shaking across Nashik city and in Surgana, Kalwan, Deola, Chandwad, Peth, Dindori and Niphad talukas.
Cracks in Two Villages, Dams Checked Out Fine
District officials found wall cracks in Bhadar village in Surgana taluka and Nanashi village in Dindori taluka. They also checked the dams nearby and found no damage.
“People should not fear. They should not believe any rumours. However, everyone should remain alert and take safety precautions,” district Collector Ayush Prasad told PTI.
No injuries or deaths have been reported so far.
Third Round of Tremors Since July
Nashik has now seen tremors three times in under a month — July 25-28, again on August 6, and now this weekend. Officials are still watching the district closely and have asked people to stay alert without spreading or believing rumours.
