Mumbai CSMT Panic: Man Brandishing Koyta Arrested After Threatening Wife

Mumbai: A wave of fear swept through the bustling area outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on Saturday after a 22-year-old man openly brandished a sharp weapon. The individual caused immediate public panic by threatening nearby commuters and a woman who was traveling with him during the daytime incident. Visuals capturing the tense sequence of events have widely circulated across social media platforms, showing the man aggressively handling a koyta (a sickle-like weapon) while pursuing the woman.

Swift Action by Local Authorities

The situation was brought under control following a rapid response from the Mata Ramabai Ambedkar (MRA) Marg Police. As originally reported by Lokmat Times, the emergency came to light when a concerned citizen posted an alert on the social media platform X. Responding immediately to the digital tip-off, a dedicated police team led by Assistant Police Inspector (API) Sandhya Nikam—alongside Constables Thombre, Patil, Talpade, and Traffic Police Constable Shinde—rushed to the crowded location near the railway station.

Police Subdue the Suspect

Upon arrival, the responding officers observed the suspect shouting and moving aggressively toward onlookers while holding the weapon aloft. Moving strategically to contain the threat, the law enforcement team surrounded the individual, successfully disarming and subduing him from behind without any reported injuries. The suspect has since been identified by officials as Waqar Anwar Shaikh.

Domestic Dispute Escalates Broad Daylight

During initial interrogation, the woman involved informed authorities that she is the suspect’s wife. According to the police, the couple had traveled to South Mumbai for a casual outing when a minor disagreement erupted between them. When local bystanders tried to step in to defuse the argument, Shaikh reportedly drew the koyta from his bag, turning the weapon toward both his wife and the intervening public. According to the report originally published by the Free Press Journal, the prompt intervention by law enforcement successfully managed to neutralize the danger before it could escalate further.

Legal Action and Prior Criminal History

Police investigators have noted that the accused is a repeat offender with multiple prior criminal entries on his record. Following the confrontation, the MRA Marg Police officially booked Shaikh under the relevant sections of the Arms Act alongside other applicable statutory provisions. A comprehensive investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remains underway.
