Meta has announced the rollout of a new “incognito” mode for AI conversations on WhatsApp, a move designed to address growing concerns around user privacy while interacting with artificial intelligence tools. According to ANI, the feature will allow users to hold temporary and private conversations with Meta AI without their chats being stored or accessed by others.
The company said the new privacy-focused feature is being introduced on both WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. Meta explained that the conversations conducted through the incognito mode will operate in a secure environment where even the company itself will not be able to view the chats. Messages exchanged during these sessions will disappear automatically after the conversation ends.
As reported by ANI, Meta stated that users are increasingly relying on AI chatbots for sensitive discussions involving financial matters, health concerns, career advice and personal relationships. The company believes the new feature will help users feel more comfortable while using AI-powered services.
Meta further revealed that the feature is built using WhatsApp’s “Private Processing” technology, which is intended to keep AI interactions confidential. The company also noted that users will initially be limited to text-based conversations in this mode, as image uploads and generation features will not be available.
International media outlets including AP and Reuters also reported that the launch comes at a time when technology companies are facing increased scrutiny over how AI systems collect, store and process user data.
Meta said the incognito feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months as part of its broader push to strengthen privacy protections across its AI services.
