Bhopal: What was supposed to be a routine Rajya Sabha nomination has turned into a full blown political drama. Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan’s papers for the Rajya Sabha from Madhya Pradesh were rejected last week, and the fallout has been swift and intense.
The Returning Officer rejected her nomination after raising objections over a pending court matter in Telangana. The official reason: her nomination affidavit didn’t include certain details. For the BJP, it’s a straightforward case of following the rules. For the Congress, it’s political maneuvering at its finest.
Party leaders are clear: there’s no criminal case against Natarajan. The Telangana matter cited is a private petition in which she isn’t accused of wrongdoing she simply filed a response. “This is not about legality; it’s about politics,” a senior Congress leader told reporters.
The rejection changes the game in Madhya Pradesh. Congress had pinned hopes on Natarajan for the third Rajya Sabha seat. With her out, BJP looks poised to sweep all three seats. The Congress says the move was meant to cut them out of the fight altogether.
Protests erupted immediately. Party leaders in New Delhi and Bhopal marched to the Election Commission demanding clarity and alleging that democratic processes were being manipulated. Telangana leaders also backed Natarajan, saying BJP claims about a pending case were misleading.
This episode highlights just how intense Rajya Sabha elections have become. What should have been a predictable contest has turned into a high stakes political battle. Reports even suggest that Congress had considered moving MLAs out of Madhya Pradesh to prevent poaching plans now thrown into uncertainty.
For Meenakshi Natarajan, a former MP and one of Congress’s key faces, this is a significant setback. Whether the party takes the fight to court or keeps it political, one thing is clear: this isn’t just about a nomination form anymore. It’s another flashpoint in the ongoing struggle between Congress and BJP, showing how even a single Rajya Sabha seat can become a national headline.
