Kolkata: The TMC (Trinamool Congress) party has already sunk after the state election’s results, and lately, an alleged felony being investigated was done by the members of the party, including the supremo Mamata Banerjee. The three-time former CM is considered to be at a vulnerable position as the CID (Crime Investigation Department) searches her residence to investigate the alleged forged signatures signed for the application for seeking recognition as the Leader of Opposition.
The CID probe came after it sent notices related to the clear information of the forged signature matter. With the CID was the Kalighat police and a flock of women police personnel which accompanied them to the party’s central office in Kolkata. The search was the reaction to the reply of the notice by the party’s National General Secretary, Abhishek Banerjee. In the reply, Abhishek stated the whereabouts of the location where the MLAs’ signatures were collected. Three CID teams have been deployed to search at various locations at the same time, one at Mamata Banerjee’s residence and the other two at Abhishek Banerjee’s residence and office respectively.

The suspicion arose when a proposal seeking TMC MLA Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition was sent to the Speaker, which included alleged falsely constructed signatures of the legislators. Two MLAs, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, reported this inconsistency to the Speaker and remarked on the submission as “manufactured and fabricated,” noting that 14 of the 70 signs were in block letters.
These allegations led to an FIR and official investigation, and in reply, the party has terminated the MLAs who complained. With this, the party is experiencing a strong victory crisis and a morale-breaking split. The investigation is underway by the CID, and Mamata Banerjee is currently away in Delhi. The MLAs were removed shortly after the CM of Kolkata revealed their names publicly.
