Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down on Saturday, 25 July, in the wake of the ongoing controversy over the NEET-UG examination. His resignation has shifted focus to the question of who might next lead the Education Ministry.
The central government has yet to name a successor. No formal communication has come from the Prime Minister’s Office or Rashtrapati Bhavan confirming the next holder of the post.
Several names have nevertheless emerged in political discussions and online speculation.
Jayant Chaudhary currently serves as Minister of State with independent charge for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and also holds the position of Minister of State for Education. He is president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal and aligned with the National Democratic Alliance before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Given his existing role within the Education Ministry, some observers have pointed to him as a possible choice if the government seeks continuity or an interim arrangement. Officials have offered no comment on these suggestions.
Sukanta Majumdar is Minister of State for Education as well as for the Development of the North Eastern Region. A Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament from West Bengal and a former state president of the party, he has been part of the Education Ministry since the start of the current term of the Modi government. Like Chaudhary, his presence in the ministry has led some to view him as an administrative option should an existing minister be elevated. No official confirmation has been provided.
Shrikant Shinde represents Kalyan in Maharashtra in the Lok Sabha and is the son of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. A medical doctor by training, he has held the Kalyan seat since 2014. Reports citing sources have indicated he may be inducted into the Union Cabinet and could be considered for the Education Ministry as part of a possible expansion. The government has not confirmed any such move.
Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra and a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, has also been mentioned in online discussions. A claim by a Shiv Sena (UBT) leader that Fadnavis could become the next Union Education Minister has circulated, yet neither the party nor the Union government has responded, and there is no official indication he is under consideration.
Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha member and a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, has likewise appeared in social media conversations and occasional reports linked to a possible Cabinet reshuffle. These mentions do not rest on official sources connecting him to the Education Ministry, and the government has made no announcement to that effect.
As matters stand, the Union government has not declared who will succeed Dharmendra Pradhan. The names that have circulated remain speculative until a formal notification is issued.
