Veteran Marathi Actress and Lavani Artist Madhu Kambikar Passes Away at 73

Veteran Marathi actress and Lavani artist Madhu Kambikar died at the age of 73 on October 12 after a prolonged illness. She passed away in Pune.

Kambikar was a respected figure in Marathi cinema, theatre and folk performance over a career spanning more than four decades. She was known for her work in films and for promoting Maharashtra’s traditional folk arts, particularly Lavani. Her performances often blended acting and dance, connecting audiences with rural cultural traditions.

Among her notable films were Hech Majha Maher, Raghumaina, Ek Hota Vidushak, Zapatlela, Debu, Yeu Ka Gharat and Shapit. Her role in Shapit brought her significant recognition.

She had remained away from the public eye for nearly a decade due to health issues. On November 27, 2016, while performing at a Lavanya Sangeet programme at Yashwant Natya Mandir in Matunga, Mumbai, she collapsed on stage and was later found to have suffered a stroke. She became bedridden thereafter and did not return to public performances.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over her death. He recalled her significant roles across films, folk theatre, commercial theatre and television, noting that her performances in several films would remain etched in public memory. He highlighted her consistent efforts to popularise folk art rooted in rural life and said her contribution over more than four decades had enriched Marathi entertainment.

The All Indian Cine Workers Association also expressed deep sadness, describing her as one of the most respected senior actresses of Marathi cinema whose honest performances and devotion to Maharashtra’s folk traditions had touched many.

With her passing, the Marathi entertainment industry has lost a veteran artist whose work remained closely tied to the state’s cultural traditions.
