Lucknow: A 26-year-old woman died under suspicious circumstances on Monday in the Thakurganj area of Lucknow, barely six months into her marriage, as her family accused her husband and in-laws of relentless dowry harassment that pushed her to the brink.
Shweta Singh was discovered hanging at her marital home. According to her relatives, she had endured repeated demands for money and gifts, including pressure to provide a four-wheeler. Her father has alleged that the in-laws may have murdered her and then arranged the scene to appear as suicide.
Shweta had tied the knot with Bhupendra Singh, also referred to as Shubham Singh, on November 22, 2025. Her father, Umesh Kumar Singh, told police that the harassment started almost immediately after the wedding. He claimed her husband subjected her to daily mental torture, while her mother-in-law allegedly roped in other family members to taunt and humiliate her, leaving the young woman deeply distressed and isolated.
On Tuesday, police registered a formal case based on the complaint filed by Umesh Kumar Singh. The accused individuals include Bhupendra Singh, his mother, father, brother, sister-in-law, and sister. They have been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically Section 80 pertaining to dowry death and Section 85 dealing with cruelty, in addition to provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

According to Thakurganj Station House Officer Omveer Singh Chauhan, Shweta’s in-laws rushed her to a nearby hospital after she was found hanging, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival. The family members accused in the case are currently absconding, and law enforcement officials have initiated raids across multiple locations to apprehend them.
A senior police officer informed reporters that the next course of action would be determined after the post-mortem examination is completed. Shweta’s body has been sent for autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Her parents have strongly maintained that their daughter was murdered due to dowry-related disputes and have implicated the entire family of her husband in the alleged crime. The incident has once again highlighted the persistent issue of dowry harassment in parts of the country despite legal safeguards.
