Jharkhand Student Protest: Soren Promises Justice

Ranchi: Jharkhand’s recruitment exam row is showing no signs of settling down. Student protests over alleged irregularities have entered their 16th day, while Chief Minister Hemant Soren has assured the protesters that justice will be delivered.

The government and student representatives held another round of talks in Ranchi on Sunday. It was the sixth such meeting, but the two sides are still struggling to find a solution. For the students, the issue is simple they want answers and a recruitment system they can trust.

The protesters have raised questions over examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Among their main demands is the cancellation of the 14th JPSC examination and an independent probe, including a demand for a CBI investigation into alleged irregularities.

They have also called for the findings of any investigation to be made public and for action against anyone found responsible.

Soren, meanwhile, has asked the students to keep talking to the government instead of taking the confrontation route. He has said their concerns will be addressed and that the government is committed to transparency. But that message has not been enough to bring the protest to an end.

The agitation has become more intense in recent days, with students resorting to hunger strikes. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto has been on an indefinite fast, and reports have raised concerns about his health.

The controversy has also spilled into politics. Opposition parties have supported several of the students demands and criticised the government over the handling of the recruitment issue. The government, on the other hand, has warned against attempts to turn the student movement into a political fight.

Despite the tension, the protesters have found different ways to keep their campaign going. At Ranchi’s Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, students have reportedly used poetry, satire and humour alongside their demonstrations to draw attention to their demands.

The immediate focus is now on what happens after Sunday’s talks. Students have indicated that they could march towards the Jharkhand Assembly on August 10 if their demands are not addressed.

For the government, the challenge is to convince the protesters that their concerns are being taken seriously. For the students, assurances are no longer enough. They want action, transparency and answers. And until they get them, the protest is set to continue.
