Jailed Rape Convict And Ex-MP Prajwal Revanna Found In Possession Of Phone During Surprise Raid

Prajwal Revanna, former Janata Dal (Secular) MP receiving a life sentence after being found guilty in a rape case, was allegedly found in possession of a cell phone while jailed in Bengaluru.

Revanna was discovered using a phone during a surprise raid by Crime Branch officers, according to sources who spoke with the news agency NDTV. The Crime Branch has opened a file and is investigating how Revanna obtained a phone while being jailed.

Authorities have taken action, suspending a top jail officer for neglecting their duties and warning another about violations in Prajwal Revanna’s cell.

Due to suspected help from officials, Jail Assistant Superintendent Eeranna Rangapur has been placed on suspension. Ansuch Kumar, the jail superintendent, has received a show-cause notice asking for an explanation for the security breaches.

Revanna, the nephew of Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy and the grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, received a life sentence for rape and harrasment last year. Additionally, he was found guilty of recording footage of the victim, a 48-year-old woman.

The woman, who was employed as a domestic helper at the Revanna family’s farmhouse in the Hassan district of Holenarasipura, said that Prajwal Revanna had routinely sexually assaulted her since 2021. He had filmed the acf and threatened to make the footage public if she informed anyone.

Shortly after the tapes surfaced, Revanna ran away to Germany and was subsequently suspended by the JD (S). After returning from Germany, he was held and lost the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Concerns have already been raised regarding the rape convict’s purported VIP treatment inside the prison. The case has brought special treatment for “VIP” inmates at Bengaluru’s primary prison back into the public eye.

Electronic communication devices, SIM cards, and personal cell phones are all prohibited in jails. Only public call offices (PCOs), approved video-calling technologies, and closely watched institutional landlines are used for permitted contact.
