Jhansi: A chilling dashcam video has shed new light on the road accident that claimed the lives of Aban Ahmed, son of slain gangster politician Atiq Ahmed, and his friend Sonu in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district.
The accident took place on August 6 on the Jhansi Kanpur National Highway in the Poonch area. The footage shows the white Hyundai Creta carrying five people travelling along the highway before it suddenly swerves, hits a concrete divider and overturns.
Aban and 25 year old Sonu died in the crash, while three other occupants of the vehicle suffered injuries and were rushed to hospital.
According to police, Aban was travelling from Prayagraj to Jhansi to meet his elder brother Ali Ahmed, who is currently lodged in Jhansi jail. The journey, however, ended in tragedy when the vehicle lost control on the highway.
The newly surfaced footage is now being closely examined by investigators. It appears to show the Creta moving at considerable speed and attempting to pass a pickup truck moments before the crash. The vehicle then suddenly moves towards the divider, leaving little time for the driver to recover control.
The exact reason behind the accident has not yet been conclusively established. Police had earlier been examining the possibility that an animal may have suddenly appeared on the road and caused the driver to swerve. Investigators are also looking at CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts and other evidence to piece together what happened in those crucial seconds.
The tragedy has added another painful chapter to the history of Atiq Ahmed’s family. Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj in April 2023 while being taken for a medical examination. That same month, Atiq’s son Asad was killed in a police encounter near Jhansi.
Atiq Ahmed’s sons have since been on different paths. Ali and Umar are in jail in separate cases, while another son, Ahzam, is out on bail.
Aban’s funeral was held at the Kasari Masari graveyard in Prayagraj, where his father, uncle and brother Asad are buried. His brothers Ali and Umar were granted conditional parole by the Allahabad High Court to attend the last rites.
For investigators, the dashcam footage could prove significant in determining exactly what caused the fatal crash. For the family, however, the video marks the final recorded moments of a journey that ended in yet another devastating loss.
