India-Indonesia Sign BrahMos Missile Deal

As part of several other historic defense agreements signed between the two nations on Tuesday, including Astra air-to-air missile systems, significant defense technology transfers, and maritime security, India is scheduled to provide Indonesia with two batteries of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles worth $200 million, according to top officials.

Although the composition might differ between land-based regiments and coastal defense batteries, a BrahMos battery normally consists of four launchers, twelve ready-to-fire missiles, plus various vehicles and equipment.

As a result, India will now export the BrahMos missiles to three nations, including Vietnam and the Philippines. Additionally, India is negotiating the export of the BrahMos with at least six additional nations.

In 2022, the Philippines purchased three weapon system batteries from India. At the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore in May of this year, Defense Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh formally announced that India had reached an agreement with Vietnam to sell BrahMos missiles and that a similar agreement with Indonesia was in “final stages.” He had stated that states often sell advanced platforms and weaponry to countries they consider to be favorable allies.

The sale of the missile system through a joint venture between Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has been discussed between New Delhi and Jakarta.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and his Indonesian colleague Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin co-chaired the third India-Indonesia defense ministers’ discussion in New Delhi in November of last year, during which the specifics of the agreement were reviewed.

During Operation Sindoor, the supersonic cruise missile, which has been operationalized in all three defense services, was crucial in targeting specific targets within Pakistan.

Additionally, Brahmos Aerospace Private Ltd. hopes to sell the missile system and its next-generation, compact BrahMos NG to at least ten nations, including West Asian nations like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as South Africa. The current BrahMos missiles’ range has been upgraded from 290 km to 500 km for land assaults and 400 km for ship attacks.
