No More Cash At Toll Plazas From April 10 But Why ? Know Here

New Delhi : India will transition to a completely cashless toll collection system on national highways starting April 10, with cash payments set to be discontinued at all toll plazas, according to a government notification reported by The Times of India. The move marks a significant step in the government’s broader push toward digitising highway operations.

As per The Times of India, the decision is part of an ongoing effort to establish a fully digital tolling ecosystem across the country. Authorities aim to streamline toll collection and improve operational efficiency by eliminating cash transactions, which have historically contributed to delays and congestion at toll booths.

The report noted that commuters will be required to use electronic payment methods such as FASTag and other digital platforms for toll payments. FASTag, which uses radio-frequency identification technology, allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, enabling seamless and contactless transactions.

Officials believe that the transition will help reduce long queues at toll plazas, particularly during peak travel periods. By removing the need for manual cash handling, the system is expected to improve traffic flow and minimise waiting times for motorists.

The Times of India highlighted that the move builds on the increasing adoption of digital toll payments in recent years, with a majority of highway users already relying on FASTag for transactions. The near-universal usage of such systems has made it feasible for authorities to phase out cash payments entirely.

The initiative is also aimed at enhancing transparency and consistency in toll collection, while reducing the scope for disputes and inefficiencies associated with cash transactions.

Overall, the transition to a cashless system reflects the government’s focus on modernising infrastructure and leveraging technology to create a more efficient and user-friendly highway network across India.
