IMD Red Alert Issued As Severe Heatwave Hits North And Central India

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for multiple states as severe heatwave conditions continue to impact large parts of North and Central India, according to a report by Republic World. Authorities warned that temperatures in several regions are expected to remain dangerously high over the coming days.

As reported by Republic World, states including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and parts of Haryana are experiencing intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures crossing normal seasonal levels by a significant margin.

MD Severe Heatwave Warning Zone (May 24–29)

  • Northwest Plains: Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi (NCR)
  • Central India: Madhya Pradesh and the Vidarbha region
  • Western Frontier: West Rajasthan (Severe pockets expecting peak surge)
  • East Adjoining: Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and parts of Chhattisgarh

While the northern plains bake under direct sunlight, the IMD has also warned of “Warm Night” conditions in Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.

According to the report, several cities recorded temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius, while some regions witnessed unusually warm nights that provided little relief from the daytime heat. Weather officials noted that the ongoing conditions were being intensified by dry atmospheric patterns across northern and central parts of the country.

Authorities also urged people working outdoors, including labourers and delivery workers, to take necessary precautions to avoid heatstroke and dehydration. Hospitals and local administrations in affected states have reportedly been placed on alert to manage heat-related emergencies.

The IMD further stated that isolated areas may experience dust storms and strong surface winds in the coming days. However, no immediate large-scale relief from the heatwave is expected in several affected regions.

Meanwhile, power demand has increased significantly due to heavy usage of cooling appliances, placing pressure on electricity supply systems in some states. Water shortages and rising consumption levels have also become concerns in heat-affected districts.

The IMD stated that hot and dry winds, along with prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures, could pose serious health risks, especially for children, elderly individuals, and people with pre-existing medical conditions. Moreover, advisory for travellers have been issued stating-

  • Do not go out between 12 pm and 4 pm as  one may experience heat exposure at the highest
  • Make sure you stay hydrated. Drink enough water.
  • Wear light and loose cotton clothing. Avoid wearing tight clothes.
  • Avoid going outdoors unnecessarily. Stay in shade.
  • Plan early morning trips so as to avoid heatwaves.
  • Keep a check on the weather alert. Be updated.
  • Don’t forget to carry oral hydration solutions
  • Hats, sunscreens and umbrellas are must
  • With the heatwave expected to continue till the end of the May, travel experts are advising tourists to avoid unnecessary daytime exposure.

The report added that the weather department continues to monitor the situation closely and has advised state governments to implement heat action plans and public safety measures to minimise the impact of the extreme weather conditions.
