Ex-Delhi Cops Plan July 31 Protest at Jantar Mantar, Demand Action Against Assault on Security Forces

Retired Delhi Police officers will protest against what they claim were assaults on police officers. According to Delhi Police, some anti-social elements allegedly entered the CJP rally and attacked police officers, resulting in over 100 injuries.

Police used a lathi charge and tear gas shells to control the crowd during the CJP’s Parliament March on July 20, according to reports of violent altercations. Police claim they were attacked by anti-social elements, while protesters have accused security forces of excesses.

Now, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar has received a letter from the Delhi Police Federation, a group of retired officials, requesting permission to hold a one-day demonstration at Jantar Mantar on July 31. “A large number of police and paramilitary force officers and personnel sustained injuries while performing their lawful duties at and around Jantar Mantar on July 20” was the federation’s submission.

To demonstrate support for the cops, the group has requested permission to hold a sit-in on July 31 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The letter, which was received on July 27 by the Delhi Police Headquarters’ General Diary (GD) Section, asks for permission for the dharna to honor the sacrifices made by security personnel in upholding law and order.

According to the federation, the planned sit-in would be carried out in a totally nonviolent and peaceful manner and is being organized on behalf of law-abiding residents and retired Delhi Police officers. While considering petitions about the July 20 police action, the Supreme Court issued some pointed remarks on Tuesday. The Supreme Court noted, “The police need a new protocol during agitations,” citing the police’s disregard for previously established guidelines during the student protests organized by the Cockroach Janta Party.

A panel led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant cited multiple violent instances in response to a series of submissions claiming police abuses against students protesting exam irregularities and the NEET paper leak nationwide.

“A totally independent probe is required. Anyone who violated the law or committed excesses ought to be held accountable. If no accountability is established, an investigation is pointless”, the Chief Justice declared.
