New Delhi: Phase-I Census has been completed in 23 states and Union Territories while field operations have commenced today in Himachal Pradesh following the completion of self-enumeration period. It will continue till July 15, 2026.
The Self-Enumeration (SE) facility has started in Kerala and Nagaland and will remain available till June 30, 2026. The field operations in these States will be conducted from July 1 to July 30, 2026. Residents may complete Self-Enumeration through the official Self-Enumeration portal (se.census.gov.in).
The 23 states who have completed there Census are namely Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana and Uttarakhand.
Meanwhile, the house-to-house field operations are currently underway in Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Puducherry and Uttar Pradesh. Residents who have already done Self-Enumeration are requested to keep their generated Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) ready and share the same with the Enumerator while they pay a visit to complete the HLO process. Households that have not done their Self-Enumeration will be covered during the physical house-to-house visit by Enumerators.
The Houselisting and Housing Census exercise carried out between May 16 and June 14, 2026 has been successfully completed in the states and Union Territories of Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Rajasthan and Jharkhand, along with areas under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in the National Capital Territory. The houselisting process in Punjab was also wrapped up on June 13, 2026.
For the first time, Census 2027 is being conducted with the support of digital technology. Data is being gathered through a specially developed mobile application while continuing the conventional door-to-door survey method to ensure complete and accurate coverage. During the Houselisting and Housing Census stage, officials are collecting details related to housing conditions, household information, available amenities and assets owned by families through a structured questionnaire containing 33 officially notified questions.
The government has reiterated that all information collected under the Census Act, 1948 is kept completely confidential and is used only for statistical analysis and development planning. Citizens in the notified states and Union Territories have been urged to cooperate with enumerators and actively participate in the Census process during field visits.
