Guhwati : A man in Assam’s Jorhat has been arrested for stealing cash and gold jewellery to the tune of Rs 50 lakh from his own house when his parents were away for a few days. Police sources said that the accused, Yash Dhanuka, was aware of the money and the ornaments in the locker at his parents’ room. They also said that after the theft he sold some of the jewellery and used the proceeds to purchase expensive gifts for his girlfriend and fund outings and parties with her. He reportedly gifted her an iPhone worth around Rs 1.5 lakh.
Dhanuka’s girlfriend, identified as Pubali Dutta, visited his house when his parents were away. Investigators are also examining messages exchanged between the two to determine whether she was aware of the alleged theft or the source of the money. Allegations have surfaced regarding the involvement of two journalists, identified as Jitendra Somani and Rohit Prasad, in the case. They allegedly assisted Dhanuka in selling some of the stolen jewellery, with a few items being sold at a store in Golaghat.
A case was registered under sections 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), 305(a) (theft in a dwelling house or other specified place), 317(2) (dishonestly receiving or retaining stolen property), 317(2) (helping to conceal stolen property), 3(5) (joint criminal liability) and 56 (abetment of an offence punishable with imprisonment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “He has been sent to judicial custody and we are investigating the case further,” officials said. “He has admitted that he gifted his longtime girlfriend an iPhone worth around ₹1.5 lakh, gave her a big amount of cash and they spent several days in some expensive hotels and resorts,” officer told HT on Tuesday.
The police have lodged an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the complaint by Dhanuka’s father. He has admitted that he gifted his longtime girlfriend an iPhone worth around ₹1.5 lakh, gave her a big amount of cash and they spent several days in some expensive hotels and resorts, officer told HT on Tuesday. Apart from Yash, two of his friends, Jitendra Somani and Rohit Prasad, were also named in the FIR, police said. However, his alleged girlfriend was not named as an accused, though she may be brought in for questioning, police said.
