Sensex Rises 787 Points Nifty At 22,968 On April 6 2026: US-Iran Ceasefire Hopes Drive Market Rebound

Mumbai: Indian benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty staged a strong comeback on Monday, April 6, 2026, recovering from early-session losses to settle over 1 per cent higher.

The Sensex closed at 74,106.85, gaining 787.30 points or 1.07 per cent. The Nifty advanced 255.15 points or 1.12 per cent to end at 22,968.25. Market breadth remained positive with far more advancing stocks than declining ones.

The sharp rebound was primarily triggered by reports that Iran and the United States had received a ceasefire proposal aimed at ending hostilities. According to a Reuters report, a framework mediated through Pakistan outlines an immediate ceasefire, potentially effective on Monday, followed by a broader agreement. This development raised hopes of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which helped stabilise crude oil prices and improved global risk sentiment.

Strong buying in banking stocks provided additional support. Investors viewed valuations as attractive following recent foreign fund outflows. The Nifty Bank and Nifty PSU Bank indices rose up to 2 per cent. Shares of Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India, and Bank of Baroda gained between 3.5 per cent and 4.2 per cent. IT stocks also advanced up to 1 per cent on expectations of a decent March quarter performance.

Most sectoral indices on the Nifty closed in the green, except for the oil and gas sector. Broader markets saw Nifty Smallcap100 and Nifty Midcap100 rising up to 1.5 per cent.

Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, said the recovery was mainly driven by the potential ceasefire framework in the Middle East, which helped stabilise crude prices after an initial spike and boosted overall sentiment.

The Indian rupee gained 14 paise to close at 93.04 against the US dollar.
