Kejriwal Invokes Hitler Comparison, Warns Modi Could Face Resignation Demand Over Delhi Protest Crackdown

A day after police action curtailed a planned protest in Delhi, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal sharply criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comparing the crackdown to the methods of Hitler and warning that calls for resignation could extend beyond the Chief Election Commissioner.

In a video message shared on X, Kejriwal accused the authorities of unleashing a “reign of terror” that crossed all limits. He claimed young women, lawyers and journalists were mistreated during the operation. “The way Modi ji unleashed a reign of terror yesterday, he crossed all limits and left even Hitler behind. Videos of his atrocities are circulating everywhere. Young girls are being subjected to atrocities and mistreated. Lawyers were not spared, journalists were not spared no one was spared,” he said. He added that it should not reach a point where, along with Gyanesh Kumar, the Prime Minister himself is forced to resign.

The Cockroach Janta Party had called for a mass demonstration at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision process. An extensive security operation significantly restricted the planned gathering, with police detaining party leaders and supporters across the capital.

Among those detained were CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das after they arrived at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Opposition figures including Kejriwal, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, were also detained. The operation resulted in more than 7,000 detentions, prompting allegations of excessive restrictions on peaceful assembly and the treatment of protesters.

The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Centre on a contempt plea alleging violation of its earlier directions. The court called for measures to prevent illegal detention of peaceful protesters and to ensure normal transport services.
