A first-year student at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Ranchi allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room on Saturday night, police said on Sunday.
The incident came to light when hostel inmates found the room locked from the inside and alerted the institute administration, which informed the police.
Ranchi (Sadar) Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Besra confirmed the death and said an investigation is underway to determine the circumstances. The student was from Bihar. Preliminary findings point to examination pressure, as exams had begun on October 8. The body has been sent to RIMS, Ranchi, for a post-mortem examination.
Police sealed the hostel room. A forensic team seized the student’s mobile phone and other articles from the room. Family members have been informed and are expected to arrive in Ranchi.
Students on campus have started an agitation, demanding better counselling support during examinations and improvements in medical facilities. They have claimed that adequate medical facilities on campus might have helped prevent the tragedy.
Statements from some students are being recorded as part of the probe to examine whether examination stress or other factors were involved.
The National Human Rights Commission has taken cognisance of the incident. Former NCPCR chairperson and current NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo said the commission would examine the alleged delay in providing medical treatment, possible administrative negligence, and the circumstances surrounding the death. Necessary directions will be issued to the Education Ministry and law enforcement agencies.
Further investigation is continuing.
