New Delhi: In a key administrative reshuffle, the Centre on Friday appointed senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar, a former Special Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police. A 1994 batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, Kumar will lead one of the country’s largest and most high profile police forces.
The appointment was announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), with Kumar succeeding Satish Golcha. His elevation comes at a time when Delhi Police continues to face a wide range of challenges, from maintaining law and order in the national capital to tackling cybercrime, organised crime and security threats.
Kumar is widely regarded as an officer with deep expertise in intelligence and internal security. During his stint with the Intelligence Bureau, he handled several sensitive assignments involving national security and inter agency coordination. His experience is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening intelligence led policing in the capital.
As Delhi Police Commissioner, Kumar will oversee policing across the National Capital Territory, including security arrangements for Parliament, foreign embassies, key government establishments, VVIP movements and major public events. The force also plays a critical role in counter terrorism operations, traffic management and crime prevention.
Officials believe Kumar’s extensive background in intelligence will help improve coordination between law enforcement and security agencies while enhancing the capital’s preparedness against emerging threats.
The Delhi Police functions under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, making the post of Police Commissioner one of the most significant policing assignments in the country. Kumar is expected to assume charge in the coming days following the official notification.
His appointment is being seen as a strategic move by the Centre, bringing an officer with decades of experience in both field policing and intelligence to head the force at a time when security remains a top priority in the national capital.
