Toll in Andhra Milk Adulteration Tragedy Climbs To 16, Probe Intensifies

Amaravati: The death toll in the suspected milk adulteration case in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district has risen to 16, with three individuals currently undergoing treatment, according to a report by Business Standard, citing Press Trust of India (PTI).

The incident dates back to mid-February, when residents in parts of Lalacheruvu reportedly fell ill after consuming adulterated milk. Patients exhibited symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, anuria, and acute kidney dysfunction, leading to multiple hospital admissions.

Health authorities began investigating after a cluster of acute renal failure cases was reported on February 22 from areas including Chowdeswaranagar and Swaroopanagar. Subsequent laboratory findings revealed that the victims died due to multi-organ failure triggered by acute renal failure. The cause was linked to the presence of a toxic substance, identified as ethylene glycol, in the milk.

Officials stated that approximately 20 individuals were hospitalised between February 16 and March 21. Of these, 16 succumbed to the illness, while three continue to receive medical care and one has recovered and been discharged.

Investigations pointed to a dairy unit in Narasapuram village under Korukonda mandal as the suspected source of the contaminated milk, which had been supplied to more than 100 families. Authorities promptly halted distribution from the unit and initiated inspections.

Multiple teams, including health officials and forensic experts, have been deployed to monitor the situation, conduct field surveys, and analyse samples. Police have registered a case, and further action is expected as investigations continue into the source and cause of the contamination.
