Shimla : At least 13 people were killed after a massive boulder crashed onto a moving Tata Sumo in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district on Friday, officials said. Bharmour-Pangi MLA Dr Janak Raj confirmed that all 13 occupants of the Tata Sumo died in the tragedy. Rescue teams were immediately rushed to the site and operations are underway to clear the debris and recover the bodies from the severely damaged vehicle.
The accident comes amid ongoing monsoon activity in Himachal Pradesh, which has increased the risk of landslides and rockfalls across the hill state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast normal monsoon conditions until July 26, while issuing a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in several districts between July 23 and July 26.
The weather department has also warned that monsoon activity is expected to intensify from July 27, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely across the state through July 29.
Persistent rainfall has already brought temperatures down by 4–5 degrees Celsius in many areas, with a further drop expected as the wet spell strengthens.The Killar–Udaipur road, which passes through steep and landslide-prone terrain, is particularly vulnerable to rockfalls during the monsoon season.
