Surat Uttarayan Tragedy: Teenage Girl Falls From Terrace, Youth Dies After Kite String Slashes Neck

Surat was struck by two tragic incidents during the Uttarayan festival, as the sudden deaths of two young residents cast a shadow over the celebrations. In separate accidents reported from Bhesan and Althan, a 14-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man lost their lives while kite flying and commuting.

14-Year-Old Girl Dies After Falling From Terrace in Bhesan

A heartbreaking incident occurred on Wednesday evening (January 14) in Jay Radhe Society of Bhesan. A 14-year-old girl, Mantu, was flying kites on the terrace of her home when she accidentally lost balance and fell from the rooftop while engrossed in kite fighting.

Residents rushed to her aid and immediately shifted her to Civil Hospital with severe injuries. However, doctors declared her brought dead even before treatment could begin. Bhesan Police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated further investigation. The body will be handed over to the family after post-mortem.

23-Year-Old Man Killed After Kite String Slashes His Neck in Althan

In another incident, a sharp kite string proved fatal for a 23-year-old man in Althan. Prince Batham was riding his moped in the area on Wednesday evening when a kite string suddenly tightened around his neck while he was passing through the road.

The impact caused him to collapse on the spot, bleeding heavily. He was rushed to a hospital, but succumbed to injuries during treatment.

Families Gripped by Grief

The sudden loss of two young lives has plunged both families into mourning on a day meant for festive joy. Homes preparing for Uttarayan celebrations were instead filled with grief on Thursday. Authorities have reiterated advisories urging people to avoid standing near terrace edges while flying kites and to wear protective gear such as neck guards or helmets while riding two-wheelers. Officials warned that even a small mistake can turn the festival into a moment of deep sorrow.
